GWAR’s New EP Proves They’re Still the Kings of Chaos

GWAR is back with a 7-song EP on Pit Records, featuring 3 new tracks and 4 recorded live. The live tracks were recorded at The Masquerade in Atlanta, GA during GWAR’s 2024 tour. The physical copies of this album also include a 32-page comic book of Gor Gor’s return from Z2 Comics.

If you’re expecting some sort of virtuoso album that elevates heavy metal to new heights, you obviously know abso-fucking-lutely nothing about GWAR. This album goes to new depths not seen in the metal genre since probably the last release from this band with a 40-year history of producing some of the craziest, most off-the-wall metal music.

All three of the new songs are catchy, with the expected vulgarity GWAR has become known for. The line “I’ll suck your dick” from Lot Lizard being one of the more standout examples. The music and production of these new tracks is exceptional. It’s a modern heavy metal album with that GWAR twist. This band has always had a talent for building on their mythology, and this album is no exception. The final new track, Tyrant King, builds on the story of Gor Gor, but you’re going to have to pick up a physical copy of the album. Every copy includes the comic book, so that’s the only way to find out how Gor Gor’s story turns out.

As for the live section of this album, to say it rips is an understatement. I’m almost embarrassed at 50 to admit that I’ve never had the pleasure of attending a GWAR concert. That’s something I plan to remedy this year. That said, the production quality on the live tracks is amazing. The whole thing plays like a condensed version of their stage show. The banter at the start of a couple of the songs is pure entertainment, as is the inclusion of one of their skits, The Founding Fathers, that then leads into an extended version of America Must Die. Not sure about the timing of this release. Maybe it’s an observation on what we’ve been seeing in the US over the past 8 months? We then end with the ever-strange Fishfuck.

Now once again I have to say, if any of this content surprises, disgusts, or offends you, GWAR is not the band for you. They’re vulgar. They’re highly inappropriate. And I’m here for every fucking second of it. We need a little politically incorrect, outrageous, made-for-pure-shock-value music right now.

It’s just too bad they can’t find a way for the vinyl to squirt out a gallon of blood during the live section. For that, you’ll have to join them on one of their upcoming dates as they embark on The Return of Gor Gor Tour with special guests Helmet, The Dwarves & Blood Vulture. Dates are listed below.

The Summary

Gwar’s The Return of Gor Gor delivers exactly what you'd expect: outrageous, filthy, and chaotic metal that expands on the band’s bizarre mythology. With three new tracks, four killer live cuts, and a comic book packed into the physical release, this isn’t some high-art metal reinvention. It’s Gwar doing what they do best: crossing lines, pissing people off, and loving every second of it.
